“Hiring new staff? is it really necessary to include interviews in the recruitment process?

Recruiting and retaining good staff has become a critical element to the success of any business. With more Y generationers and Millenials entering the workforce, scrutinizing the characteristics of the younger generations, and how we go about recruiting and retaining top talent is more important than ever.

In most cases, we are bringing Y generationers and Millenials into a baby boom culture and environment without understanding the characteristics, needs or expectations of the employees coming into the business. In today's world, Millennials show little loyalty unless there is an alignment of goals, values, environment, and leadership style.

So the quality of the recruitment process and the importance of getting the employee fit right has become paramount to creating happiness, performance and longevity in companies. Too many companies are treating their interview and recruitment process like a speed dating event, often resulting in disappointment - a bit like a one night stand, which promises so much but then often fails to live up to expectations. There's often no planning, set objective, or an idea of how to achieve it. Incorrect assumptions are made and irrelevant questions are asked with little or no direction.

Rather, the recruitment process and the hiring of new staff needs to be approached more like pre-marital counseling with long-term commitment, compatibility and contentment in mind. The role needs to be accurately defined, key objectives outlined and candidates need to be thoroughly screened accordingly. The interview process needs to cater for the candidates input and a high degree of detail and sensitivity needs to be given to understanding things about the candidate that they don't even know about themselves. The interview needs to be firm, friendly and engaging. You want the candidate to feel relaxed so they will share openly, but they also need to be aware of who is facilitating the process.

Conducting a professional interview is a highly skilled job, which is honed by years of experience. It is Science and an art, a complex process of reasoning and interpreting detailed and often subliminal information. It requires clear questioning, the understanding of body language, an ability to analyse the depth of the candidate's reasoning and thought process.

The more time we spend developing and practicing sound and scientific recruitment practice, the more aligned our employees will be with our company culture, and the more longevity we will experience from them. The happier they are the more productive they will be.
